Everything you need to know about our Speech and Language Assessment Process for children, including costs.

We offer an open referral system, this means that a referral can be made by anyone, including parents/carers and professionals. If a referral is made by someone who does not have parental responsibility e.g. by a teacher/SENCO, we will require consent from a parent/carer.

Referrals can be made by telephone, in writing or by email.

5 Step Speech and Language Assessment Process

  1. Questionnaire: Upon referral, the referrer will be sent our Terms of Business and a background information questionnaire to fill in.
  2. Assessment Appointment(s): Once we receive the completed questionnaire, we will be in touch to arrange a suitable assessment appointment. Assessment appointment(s) typically take place at our Norwich based clinic, but other locations (e.g. education settings) may be used if appropriate. A standard initial assessment in clinic takes place over the course of two appointments, each lasting approximately 50 minutes. Assessment may include informal observations during play-based activities and/or the use of formal standardised assessments. Parents/carers are required to be present.
  3. Written Report:  Following the clinical assessment, parents/carers will receive a written report detailing the findings and recommendations for therapy and support if required.
  4. Meeting:  We will arrange a meeting to discuss the contents of the report with parents/carers. This meeting can be done face to face at our Norwich clinic, by phone or virtually (e.g. Zoom, Google Meet, Teams).
  5. Therapy Sessions & Support: If therapy sessions are clinically indicated and parents/carers wish to proceed, we will design and deliver an individual therapeutic programme of support. This may include direct work with the child and/or parent/carer coaching and/or training to education staff.

We offer a flexible service of therapy, tailored to meet the individual’s needs, including daily, weekly, or monthly sessions. Therapy may be ongoing or delivered in blocks with consolidation breaks.

The speech and language therapist reserves the right to withdraw or review the frequency of therapy. They will discuss this with the parents/carers if treatment is no longer needed or deemed to be effective.

Your child will be assessed using age-appropriate activities, which may include informal observation during child-led play and the use of formal, standardised assessments. You are encouraged to observe the session. Once the assessment is completed the therapist will prepare a detailed report containing the assessment results and interpretation, informal observations and recommendations for any indicated intervention. We then discuss this report with you at a separate parent meeting.
